What a plumbing quote should include
Homeowners compare two or three quotes on most jobs. The quote that looks organized usually wins even when it isn't the cheapest, because it signals you'll run the job the same way. Make sure every quote covers:
- Who you are — business name, license number and contact info. In most states a license number on written estimates is required for plumbing work.
- The exact scope — "replace 40-gal gas water heater, haul away old unit, new supply lines and pan" beats "water heater work". Vague scope is where disputes start.
- Itemized pricing — separate the service call fee, labor and materials. Customers accept a number they can see the parts of.
- The deposit and payment terms — how much to book, when the balance is due, and what payment methods you take.
- A valid-until date — protects you from material price swings and gives the customer a reason to decide.
- Warranty — how long you stand behind the labor. It's a selling point; put it in writing.
